Artists in the Gardens

In 2011 we embarked on a unique collaboration with the United South End Artists.  South End artists have been invited to create paintings in the gardens on the tour. You will find them working as you follow the route, feel free to stop, chat and ask questions.

Enjoy the View from Rooftops

It is always inspiring to see what people do with their outdoor rooms and if you enjoy the combination of fresh air, a great view and spaces that have been considered so carefully every inch of real estate is used. Then you will love the rooftop gardens featured on our tour.

Explore the Historic South End

The South End is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as “the largest urban Victorian neighborhood in the country. The tree-lined streets with iron railings, private gardens, and small green parks scattered through tree lined streets are known for its fine dining and art galleries.

Join us for the 2017 South End Garden Tour

This year’s tour is centered on gardens and green spaces in and around the Eight Streets, Union Park, Old Dover, and SOWA neighborhoods. A mix of public and private spaces including  private back yards, front gardens, roof deck gardens, community gardens, and neighborhood ‘pocket parks.’ Artists will return to the gardens this year and the tour will be followed by a reception and sale of their wet works. Admission to the reception and sale is included in the tour admission.

Peek into Private Gardens

Every year the tour offers a unique view into the private outdoor spaces of South End residents. All of the gardens demonstrate the creativity of the owners. Urban gardening can be very challenging but there is also great joy in carving out a green place amidst the density and asphalt of the city.

See Community Gardening in Action

Included in the tour are several of the community gardens and pocket parks that the South End & Lower Roxbury Gardens was established to protect. Proceeds of the Tour exclusively benefit the South End & Lower Roxbury Gardens through The Trustees – Boston Region, a nonprofit organization supporting community gardens and urban green spaces.

Wander through Gardened Alleys

Typically, alleys are forgotten communal areas in a neighborhood. That means that sometimes they fall prey to trash dumping and neglect. But in the South End they are treasured space and through the years neighbors have worked together to transform them into community gardening spaces. Open to the public only for the tour, you have the opportunity to explore these hidden gardens.
